Eco Funerals

More and more people are concerned about the effects that humans are having on the environment. This is particular true following a person’s death, where they want to leave a lasting legacy. Ecological or ‘green’ funeral alternatives can have a lesser impact on the environment.

One of the main aspects that can be controlled is the material used to make the coffin. Eco friendly funerals can be biodegradable – using bamboo or cardboard are popular choices, but woven coffins using materials such as wicker, banana leaf and water hyacinth are also available.

In addition, embalming is not suitable for green funerals, however you can now also opt for chemical free embalming fluids. Additional considerations you may have is to use fewer vehicles to cut down on fuel and emissions. You may also choose a woodland burial site in order to plant a memorial tree and give back to the Earth.

A green funeral can include cremation but the ashes can be interred in a biodegradable container. Some crematoriums may also offer reduced prices to cremate environmentally friendly coffins as they may use less energy and produce fewer emissions than wooden coffins.

Although green funerals can be simpler than more traditional funerals, they are no less dignified. Some people feel that the simplicity enhances the occasion. There is also the simple fact that even after death, you are not having an unnecessary impact on the environment and can leave a lasting, natural mark on the Earth.
